Welcome to the McHenry Middle School Adjusted Learning and SAIL program!
We are very excited to be working with your students this year!
The Adjusted Learning and SAIL program addresses academics through a life skills prospective. We encourage our students to participate fully in the middle school setting to the best of their ability. Through school, community, and social activities, our students will grow into productive members of their communities. Both programs provide individualized accommodations to foster successful learning and independence across environments.
I am Katie Granahan, the Adjusted Learning teacher and Special Olympics coach at MMS. When I am not in my classroom, you can find me traveling with my husband to national parks, searching for amazing sweet treats at bakeries, singing along at concerts, gardening at home and school, and coaching Special Olympics Swimming through NISRA.
I have so much planned for this school year!
Unique Learning Systems/ N2Y is our primary curriculum for reading, math, science & social studies.
The PCI sight word curriculum is an additional resource I use to help my students learn to read.
Throughout the week, students will have opportunities to participate in functional life skill activities. Some examples are cooking, gardening, grocery shopping.
The class will venture out into the surrounding communities every Wednesday afternoon. Some examples of activities are grocery shopping, sampling menu items at a restaurant, farms, parks, and outdoor sports activities.
Our classroom has a few businesses: On Friday mornings-What's Brewing Coffee Shop & a Farmer's Market Stand- we grow fresh flowers in the fall/spring and veggies the entire year.
Special Olympics-Throughout the school year, my students will be participating in Special Olympic practices. They have the choice to participate in the regional competition at end of each sport session. The sports are bocce ball, bean bags, basketball skills, snowshoeing, bowling, soccer, & track field.

Special Olympics programs welcome participants with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provides quality training & competition, stresses athletic excellence, rewards determination, emphasizes health and celebrates achievements. We want athletes to do their best, and at the same time develop physical fitness, experience joy, develop skills and friendships. Currently, students enrolled in ALC & SAIL classes at McHenry Middle School participate in McHenry D15 Special Olympics. Kathleen Granahan, ALC MMS teacher, coaches the team.
